Coexistence around judo
The branch of judo has given a lot of honor, many moments of happiness to Israel and has become popular among many children and teenagers. The Arab Jewish Institute of the Histadrut, an institute that deals with coexistence and mediation between the sectors, recognized this and, together with the Abu Gush Community Center, established a joint group for children and youth from Jerusalem and Abu Gush. As part of the ‘Jerusalem Mountains’ project, dozens of girls and boys aged 12-15 are training in the Japanese martial art, and in addition to attack techniques for Waziri and the iPhone, they mainly learn about each other, each about the other’s culture, stay at each other’s houses, bridge gaps and get to know each other’s teammates . The Institute of the Histadrut, headed by Arnon Bar David and replaced by Roi Yaacov, considers this project of utmost importance, and believes that the values of judo bring cultures closer together. The CEO of the Arab Jewish Institute, Shadi Kablan: “We at the institute believe in sports as a bridge between cultures, promoting coexistence and knowing the other. From a young age, we use sports as a key to relations between religions.” Besides the competitions and training, as mentioned, the youth meet for events designed to bring them closer together. The project is also supported by Beit Esther and Meitav Jerusalem, and partners in the way are Muhammad Issa Geber, director of the Abu Gush Community Center, Meir Russo, and Yoel Liebster. Muhammad Issa Geber, director of the community center: “Abu Gush has become a symbol of coexistence. With the help of the institute and the judo association, we established a mixed judo team with values of tolerance, social cohesion, acceptance of the other and coexistence. A project we are very proud of.
